Faith Under Fire – Man as Instructor

“The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” — Psalm 27:1 (ESV)

Every soldier understands that battles do not always come in conventional ways. You train for certain enemies, certain conditions, and certain missions. You prepare yourself physically, mentally, and spiritually for the fight ahead. But sometimes the hardest battles are not fought on foreign soil. Sometimes the greatest tests come when your character is questioned, your motives are misunderstood, and your faithfulness to God comes at a personal cost.

Believe me, I know what that feels like. Several years ago, I walked through a difficult season when public criticism came against me because of statements I made about my Christian faith while in uniform. The headlines were harsh. The accusations were challenging. After spending my life serving and even shedding blood for my nation while wearing the uniform of the United States Army, suddenly I found myself in a battle I never expected.

Yet during that difficult season, God brought me back repeatedly to the words of David in Psalm 27:1 “The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?” King David understood what it meant to be under attack. Before he ever wore the crown, he spent years running from King Saul, a man determined to destroy him. David had done nothing but faithfully serve, yet he was misunderstood, falsely accused, and forced into hiding in the wilderness.

But notice what David does not say. He does not say, “My reputation is my salvation.” He does not say, “My strength, my position, or my ability to defend myself is my stronghold.” No, David says, “The LORD is the stronghold of my life.” That truth changes everything. When the Lord is your stronghold, circumstances do not have the final word. Critics do not have the final word. Even your enemies do not have the final word. God does.

David continues, “Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war arise against me, yet I will be confident” (v. 3). That is not arrogance. That is not self-confidence. That is God-confidence.

Every man will eventually face a battle he cannot control. Maybe it will come through criticism, betrayal, failure, disappointment, or a situation where people misunderstand your heart. The natural instinct is to fight harder, defend yourself louder, or become consumed with proving others wrong.

Yet David points us toward a better response. “One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life” (v. 4). In the middle of the battle, David’s greatest desire was not revenge. It was not even vindication. It was the presence of God. That is where real strength is found.

Looking back, I can say God was faithful to me. The truth eventually came out and I was exonerated, but more importantly, the Lord sustained me while I waited. In fact, Psalm 27 ends with a command every warrior of faith must learn: “Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD!” (v. 14). Waiting is not weakness. Trusting God is not retreat. Sometimes the most courageous thing a man can do is stand firm, remain faithful, and let the Lord fight battles only He can win.

The world may misunderstand you. People may criticize you. Circumstances may shake around you. But when the Lord is your light, your salvation, and your stronghold, you can stand with confidence. Because the man who stands with God never stands alone.

  • When you face criticism or opposition, is your first response to defend yourself or to seek the presence and guidance of God? Are you willing to remain faithful to God even when obedience brings misunderstanding or personal cost?
  • How are you using your challenging experiences to instruct those you love and lead to lean on the Lord?
  • What battle are you facing right now where you need to remember that the Lord—not your circumstances—is your stronghold? Pray and look to the Lord as your light and your salvation.
