Week of August 17 – August 23
United - Man as Battle Buddy

"Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity! It is like the precious oil on the head, running down on the beard, on the beard of Aaron... It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion! For there the LORD has commanded the blessing, life forevermore."

- Psalm 133:1-3 (ESV)

Every military unit develops a bond that is difficult for civilians to understand. Shared hardship creates uncommon friendships. Whether enduring the rigors of selection, long deployments, or the dangers of combat, soldiers learn to trust one another with their very lives. A dependable battle buddy is more than a friend. He watches your blind spots, shares your burdens, tells you the truth when you need to hear it, and refuses to leave you behind. Having that camaraderie allows you to focus on the mission instead of constantly looking over your shoulder.

God never intended the Christian life to be lived as a solo mission. Throughout Scripture we find men encouraging, strengthening, and standing beside one another in the battles of life. David and Jonathan, Elijah and Elisha, Paul and Timothy—God repeatedly accomplished His purposes through men who walked together in faith. Psalm 133 celebrates that kind of relationship with one simple declaration: "Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!"

Basically, David says: "Don't miss the fact that brotherly unity has incredible value.” Yet genuine brotherly unity is rare. Our culture celebrates independence and self-reliance. We men are conditioned to handle our own problems, conceal our struggles, and never let anyone see weakness. God's Word points us in a different direction. Satan loves to isolate believers because isolated men are vulnerable men. A soldier separated from his unit becomes an easier target, and the same is true spiritually. God designed us to stand shoulder to shoulder with other godly men.

David illustrates this unity with two powerful images. First, he compares it to the sacred oil poured over Aaron when he was consecrated as Israel's high priest. That anointing oil symbolized God's blessing, His presence, and His calling. David reminds us that true unity is not manufactured by a compatible personality or shared interests; it is a work of God's Spirit. Then he compares it to the refreshing dew of Mount Hermon that nourished the land. In the dry climate of Israel, dew meant life and refreshment. In the same way, faithful friendships refresh weary souls. God often strengthens us through another brother who prays with us, encourages us, and reminds us of His promises when the battle becomes difficult.

That is exactly what a battle buddy does. H
e doesn't simply tell you what you want to hear. He tells you what you need to hear. He lovingly holds you accountable when you're drifting spiritually and points you back to Christ when discouragement begins to cloud your vision. As Proverbs 27:17 reminds us, "Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another." God uses faithful friendships to make us stronger men. Additionally, every Christian man needs another man who will stand with him in the fight—not merely as a companion, but as a brother committed to helping him finish well. At the same time, each of us should strive to become that kind of friend for someone else.

Ultimately, the greatest example of faithful friendship is Jesus Christ. When His disciples failed Him, He did not abandon them. After His resurrection, He sought them out, restored them, and recommissioned them for service. He is the Friend who truly "sticks closer than a brother" (Prov. 18:24). Because Christ has remained faithful to us, we are called to demonstrate that same steadfast faithfulness to others.
David closes the Psalm by declaring, "There the LORD has commanded the blessing." God delights to bless men who walk together in humility, accountability, and unity. Men, if God has already given you a faithful battle buddy, be grateful and invest in that relationship. If you don't have one, ask the Lord to provide one. Then be willing to become the kind of brother you are praying to find. The strongest battle buddies are not only loyal companions—they also continually point one another to Jesus Christ, who will never leave us nor forsake us, and who promises to bless our unity.

  • Are you intentionally investing in a heart level friendship with another Christian man, or are you trying to fight your spiritual battles alone?
  • If you have a battle buddy, what step can you take this week to strengthen that relationship so that you are unified?
  • Ask the Lord to knit your heart and unite with another godly man in a battle buddy relationship.
